What is a treaty?

To begin our journey of learning about treaties, we first need to understand what a treaty is!  This is what we came up with:

-it’s the law

-every year people gather together to honor the treaty

-it’s a deal between countries

-we are part of Treaty 4

trea·ty/ˈtrētē/

Noun:
A formally concluded and ratified agreement between countries.

And the journey begins…

I have started this blog in the hopes of documenting my journey into treaty education.  This will be a place where my students next year can post their learning and hopefully interact with other classrooms in Saskatchewan and abroad about what it is like to be a “treaty” person.  I figured the first step in this project should be to set this on-line space up, and to be able to show our very beginning steps.  So here it it, Step One, the blog has begun.

Next step:  secure a Treaty Kit from the Office of the Treaty Commissioner.  In particular, I think I need:

Teaching Treaties in the Classroom: A Treaty Resource Guide for Kindergarten to Grade 6.  Saskatoon: Office of the Treaty Commissioner, 2008.
